Las Vegas Raiders vs. Los Angeles Chargers Matchup Preview (10/4/21)

The Las Vegas Raiders have shocked the NFL  starting their season undefeated with a 3-0 record. Derek Carr has proven that he belongs as the QB1 for the Raiders and has shown tons of heart and grit while leading the league in passing against some of the tougher defenses in the NFL. With last week’s overtime win over the Dolphins, The Raiders are proving to the league that they are not to be trifled with. Monday night might be the toughest matchup for Vegas as they face the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium in a battle for the top of the AFC West division. Justin Herbert and the Chargers will be looking to add the first loss to Vegas’ perfect record coming off of an impressive victory against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chargers’ new head coach Brandon Staley seems to have created a great new atmosphere that LA has been lacking for some years and this Charger squad is looking like one of the elite teams of the NFL. Monday Night will be a great test for the Raiders and will prove just how good the currently undefeated team actually is. With the chance to grab first place in the division with a Denver Broncos loss, and an opportunity to further the gap against the (1-2) Kansas City Chiefs, I expect this game to be competitive throughout and come down to the wire.

Las Vegas Raiders vs. Los Angeles Chargers Betting Odds

The Raiders head into this game as a underdog. The Raiders and Chargers rivalry runs deep so this game can truly go either way. The Los Angeles Chargers have given up the most rush yards this season and with the potential of RB Josh Jacobs coming back into the Raiders lineup on Monday, the Raiders should be deadly offensively with the league leader in passing in the backfield combined with one of the elite running backs in the league. The Chargers defense has allowed 605 passing yards through three games this season and held Patrick Mahomes to 260 yards on top of picking him off twice. With the Chargers being the favorite in this game at , I am liking the Raiders chances especially if Josh Jacobs is in the backfield.

My Predictions: Raiders win 35-31,  over 52.5 points

Las Vegas Raiders Analysis

Derek Carr has been phenomenal for the Raiders this season, leading the league in passing and doing so against three of the most elite defenses in the NFL. After a rollercoaster of a game against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1, fans were quick to brush off the Raiders win and call it a fluke. Week 2 proved that the Raiders squad is different this year and it looks like HC John Gruden has finally got it figured out for the squad that has been somewhat of a laughing stock in the NFL for the past couple of years. The Raiders wide receiver core has been incredible this season with four players rallying in over 200 yards each. Derek Carr has a ton of offensive talent this season with a great core in Henry Ruggs III, Hunter Renfrow, Bryan Edwards, and Darren Waller. It will be interesting to see how these skill players matchup against the defensive backs of the Chargers with players such as Chris Harris Jr., Asante Samuel, and Derwin James leading the backfield coverage.

Aside from the Raiders passing game, Josh Jacobs is expected to return in Monday Night’s matchup and what better time it would be for his arrival after missing the previous two weeks. Jacobs scored two touchdowns in his sole appearance this season against the Baltimore Ravens and will be returning against the Chargers, who have allowed the most rushing yards this season. In case anyone forgot, Josh Jacobs, rushed for over 1000 yards and 12 touchdowns last season and his return will bring tons of relief to the Raiders passing game. With a quarterback with the most passing yards in the league and one of the elite running backs in the NFL, the Raider offense will be a force to reckon with.

Los Angeles Chargers Analysis

Justin Herbert is the real deal and is proving that he is going to be the face of the Los Angeles Chargers for years to come. In his sophomore season, Herbert is playing like a veteran. Last week’s performance against the Kansas City Chiefs proved this as the quarterback went on to throw four touchdowns with no turnovers in a windy and vicious environment at Arrowhead Stadium. Wide Receiver Mike Williams has been electric this season, hauling in seven catches for 122 yards and two touchdowns in last weeks victory over the Chiefs.  Keenan Allen had eight catches for 50 yards and a touchdown as well. Austin Ekeler has been insanely productive and has eclipsed either over 100 yards or a touchdown in every game this season. The Chargers offensive line has done a really solid job protecting Herbert and has allowed the ninth-lowest adjusted sack rating in the NFL this season per Football Outsiders. With tons of offensive threats on the Chargers, the Raiders defense will need to play big in order to contain Herbert.

Las Vegas Raiders vs. Los Angeles Chargers Daily Fantasy Picks

If Josh Jacobs is cleared to play, which he is most likely to, he is an absolute must-start for your fantasy lineup. The Chargers are averaging 170 rushing yards allowed this season and with a running back like Jacobs, I expect The Raiders to establish the run game early. Another Raiders player to consider is Darren Waller. The Raiders tight end is arguably the best at his position in the league and has been target by Derek Carr 33 times this season. Having Jacobs back in the lineup will relieve pressure and help create more opportunities for players like Waller to get open.

Austin Ekeler is another player to consider. The Chargers running back is a dual-threat in the passing and run game and has a combined 15 receptions in his past two games. Along with reception, Ekeler receives the majority of rushing attempts and has been consistent all year long.
