New York Giants vs. Miami Dolphins Matchup Preview (12/5/21)

This week on Sunday, December 5th at 12:00 PM EST, the 4-7 New York Giants make their way to Florida to play the 5-7 Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium. The Giants have had a disappointing road game record coming in at 1-4, and are looking to stop the streak. Although, the Giants are coming off a necessary win against NFC East rival, the Philadelphia Eagles. The Giants are going to want to start a winning streak to remove them from the 4th seed in the NFC East. The Dolphins have been electrifying with a four-game win streak with a very impressive win against the AFC North leaders, the Baltimore Ravens. Both teams are going to leave their life on the field in hopes of securing a Week 13 win.

New York Giants vs. Miami Dolphins Betting Odds

The Miami Dolphins are looking to extend their win streak to five, and the Giants are hoping to take theirs to two. The Dolphins have been surprising fans and spectators all year. After starting the season 1-7, many people were taking bets against them. Their performance against the Ravens left me in shock as I would have placed hefty sums for the Ravens even with their myriad of injuries. With the gameplay they have sustained over the past four weeks, the Dolphins have an opportunity to steal another win from the Giants.

Last week, I picked against the Giants in their match-up against the Eagles. I was once again shocked and left surprised. Both teams have kept myself and other fans on their toes. However, this week, I’m sticking with the Dolphins. ESPN projects them to win by 60.1% and leaves the Giants with a meager margin of success with 39.6%.

The spread is laid as Dolphins -2.5 and Giants +2.5. The moneyline is placed at Dolphins -150 and Giants +130. All odds are pointing towards Miami, and I couldn’t agree more. The team has shown significant improvement and has a fire that doesn’t look to be diminishing.

My pick: Dolphins Win 28-20

New York Giants Analysis

The New York Giants are running off of a conference win against the Philadelphia Eagles. The New York team currently sits at 4-7 and is still placed last in the NFC East. Their success might be attributed to the pressing defense on Jalen Hurts. The defense is a top 15 defense that continuously can apply heavy pressure on a quarterback. They intercepted Hurts three times last game and will use their pressure to make Tua Tagovailoa sweat in the pocket.

Saquon Barkley made his first official return from an ankle injury two weeks ago and has not performed to the level of intensity he possesses. Since his return, Barkley has been relatively cold, only putting up 65 rushing yards and 11 receiving yards. I’m not sure if his lack of intensity stems from nerves surrounding an injury recovery, if he may not be as explosive as he once was, or if his offensive line is not making the proper space for him to take advantage. The good news is, the Miami defense is in the bottom 10 of the league, so maybe the Giants can give Barkley crucial blocks to run downfield. Perhaps we’ll be able to see the prime of Saquon Barkley once again.

Daniel Jones played his best game since Week 10 against the Chiefs. Jones threw for 202 yards and rushed for 30. Even though he only threw one touchdown pass, the Giants were still able to receive enough yardage for game-altering field goals. Jones was able to utilize his wide receiver Kenny Golladay for three receptions and 50 yards. Golladay has been somewhat quiet since the match-up with the New Orleans Saints, but he made the crucial catches and ran the ball to help the Giants win.

In order to play efficiently this week, the Giants are really going to need to focus on their third-down conversions. Last week, they only converted 3-12 times. A team not making a 1st down can change the whole trajectory of a game. The Giants punt the ball an astonishing amount. The rate hasn’t changed since they fired offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, so I wonder if it’s a play calling issue or just a lack of determination to reach for an influential first down.

Miami Dolphins Analysis

The Miami Dolphins have been making a splash these past few weeks with an impressive four-game win streak. Part of their success might be owed to their now-healthy rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Tagovailoa had a bit of a shaky start to his first season by starting the season with a fractured rib and having a few minor injuries throughout the weeks. However, last week Tagovailoa was able to accomplish an 87.1% completion rate and threw for 230 yards and one touchdown. It seems as if Tua has gotten more comfortable in his leadership NFL role and is more willing to stand out. He’ll have to showcase agility and precision against the unforgiving Giants defense if he wants to continue their winning streak.

Fortunately for the Dolphins, their depth chart shows no sign of first-string players being out due to injury. This is a blessing most other NFL teams don’t have the luxury to experience. With this fortune, the team can continue their same gameplay and not have to rely on a switch in play-calling, which will be a huge advantage. Tua will be looking to take advantage of his top receiver, Jalen Waddle, and his top rusher, Myles Gaskin, to make the big plays.

Myles Gaskin isn’t the most impressive rusher in the league, but he is a backbone to the Miami offense. He currently has 482 yards on the season as well as two touchdowns. Gaskin has had peak games against struggling defenses such as the Jets and the Falcons and doesn’t perform as effectively with better defenses like the Buccaneers or the Bills. The Giants have a better defense than the Jets and Falcons, so I wonder how effective of a player he will be this week. If he can find a hole within the defense, he will need to take full advantage and take the ball to the endzone.

New York Giants vs. Miami Dolphins Daily Fantasy Picks

The New York Giants and the Miami Dolphins are usually not the two most desired teams to raid for fantasy. This year, both quarterbacks have given average points and haven’t boomed and made a large impact on point values. Between the two of them, Tagovailoa is projected 16.6 points, and Jones is projected 15.9. I can see both quarterbacks falling around those numbers and would maybe suggest finding a quarterback on another team.

Saquon Barkley and Myles Gaskin are also very close in point projections this week. Barkley is projected to score 14.4 points, and Gaskin is given 13.9. However, Barkley only received 9.3 points last week, and Gaskin gathered 19.2. It will make me wonder if Myles Gaskin has the momentum and fire to put up more points again this week.
