Philadelphia Eagles vs. Las Vegas Raiders Matchup Preview (10/24/21)

The Eagles are coming off the most improbable against the spread (ATS) victory of the season, barely covering 6.5 points against a dominant Tampa Bay offense. They’ll face another test this week, as 3-point road underdogs to the Raiders.

The Raiders have decided to rally around interim head coach Rich Bisaccia, as they cruised to a 34-24 road victory in Denver last week.

Both teams are frisky, but it’s clear the Raiders have been the better team through a third of the season. However, do they pose value in this situation?

Let’s dive into this matchup.

Philadelphia Eagles vs. Las Vegas Raiders Betting Odds

The Eagles have been tough, and Jalen Hurts has shown promise at times this year.

However, Philadelphia has been far too inconsistent, and their 2-4 record shows it. The Raiders, however, have shown more consistency across their roster, and I believe they’ll cover the field goal spread on Sunday.

In terms of efficiency, these teams are similar, but Las Vegas holds a slight edge.

The Raiders have home-field advantage, and they are coming home after playing at Mile High last week. I believe that’s enough for Las Vegas to win and cover Sunday afternoon.

Philadelphia Eagles Analysis

The Eagles are a mystery to me.

Given their talent on the defensive line, this team should be winning at the point of attack. Because of guys like Fletcher Cox, they don’t have to blitz a lot (second-lowest rate in the league), but they also aren’t generating a lot of pressure (11th-lowest rate in the league). They rank among the top-10 teams in PFF’s pass rush grades, but also rank 28th in PFF’s rush defense grades.

Overall, the defensive line ranks just 28th in adjusted line yards, and the defense ranks 26th in Rush Success Rate.

Meanwhile, Hurts has looked like a stud in short sturts:

But overall, he grades out as PFF’s 21st-best quarterback. He’s made 15 Big Time Throws, but also nine Turnover Worthy Plays, posting an 8:4 touchdown-to-interception ratio in the process.

Surprisingly, he gets jumpy in a clean pocket. When he’s pressured or blitzed, Hurts has completed only 48% of his passes, but for over eight YPA and a 9:0 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Meanwhile, he’s thrown all eight of his interceptions from either a clean pocket or when he’s not blitzed.

Las Vegas Raiders Analysis

For the Raiders, everything centers around Derek Carr. Carr grades out as PFF’s sixth-best quarterback this season, completing 64.2% of his passes for over 8.4 yards per attempt and a 10:4 touchdown-to-interception ratio.

He’s been particularly good driving the ball downfield. He’s made a whopping 17 Big Time Throws on throws 20+ yards downfield — Tom Brady ranks second with 13. He’s completing just 43% of his passes but leads the league with 603 yards on those throws.

However, the caveat with Carr is he needs a clean pocket. Under pressure this season, Carr is completing just 45.6% of his throws for 7.5 yards per attempt and a 4:3 touchdown-to-interception ratio.

Unfortunately, the Raiders’ offensive line ranks just 28th in adjusted line yards. The rush game has suffered from that as well, as the Raiders rank 31st in rush EPA per play.

Richie Incognito’s injury has been a massive detriment to the success of that unit. Without him, the rest of the line seems to have crumbled, and his replacements haven’t proven very successful.

That’s why I’m not super high on the Raiders moving forward. I believe they win this game, but their pass-happy approach isn’t sustainable. Carr is a good quarterback, but he can’t carry a team like Brady can. Football games are won in the trenches, and the Raiders are losing that battle for the time being.

At least on the offensive side. Surprisingly, the Raiders defense grades out at PFF’s third-best, and Las Vegas is first in PFF’s pressure grades.

Plus, the Raiders are able to get pressure with just four rushers. While Las Vegas blitzes at the lowest rate in the league (13.5%), they rank 13th in pressure percentage (26.2%). That allows the Raiders to drop back more guys in the secondary, and Las Vegas ranks second in PFF’s coverage grades as a result.

Philadelphia Eagles vs. Las Vegas Raiders Daily Fantasy Picks

For DFS lineups, I’m targeting Hunter Renfrow in this game.

Renfrow picked up a team-high 23% Target Marketshare in Week 5. His biggest competition for targets is Darren Waller, but while Philadelphia ranks 11th in passing defense DVOA vs. TEs, the Eagles rank 25th in that stat vs. #1 WR’s.

Renfrow is going to get open far more than Waller in this matchup. Given Carr’s affinity for pushing the ball downfield, Renfrow has a ton of big-play upside.

I love Renfrow in Week 7.
