Philadelphia Eagles vs Washington Football Team Matchup Preview (1/2/22)
The Philadelphia Eagles fly out to the nation’s capital this weekend to take on the Washington Football team in a showdown between two NFC East rivals with playoff aspirations. The two teams meet for the second time in three weeks, with the Eagles getting the better of the Football Team in the first matchup. The football team comes into the weekend off a 42 point loss to the Cowboys, their biggest of the season, while the Eagles come in off a 24 point win against the New York Giants. With each team trending in the opposite direction, fans have never been higher on the Eagles and lower on the Football Team — making this one of the most interesting games of the weekend to bet.

The Pick
In a divisional game between two teams who are playing each other for the second time in three weeks, I like the home underdog who lost the first meeting to cover. There’s never been a point this season where Philadelphia has been viewed by the public more favorably than they are right now, and there’s never been a point where the public has been lower on Washington. With a lot of players getting a second full week of practice after being cleared from COVID, I expect much more continuity from this team on offense. The one thing Washington is really bad at is defending the pass, and Philadelphia doesn’t like throwing the ball.
My Prediction: Philadelphia wins 24-22. Washington covers (+3.5) and the over hits (o44.5)

Philadelphia Eagles Analysis
After starting the season 5-7 and looking like a sure-fire third place finisher in the NFC East, the Philadelphia Eagles have rattled off three straight wins and put themselves in position to snag a wild card spot. Currently, the Birds occupy the seventh seed in the NFC, propped up by a one game lead over the Vikings in 8th place. Dallas has already clinched the NFC East, and the Washington Football Team sits two games behind Philadelphia in third place.
The Eagles owe a lot of their late season success to their newfound identity as a rushing juggernaut. Averaging 163.2 yards a game on the ground, the Eagles have an 8 yard advantage on the second place rushing offense in the Indianapolis Colts. Between QB Jalen Hurts and RB Miles Sanders, the Eagles operate under a dual threat attack that prioritizes a lot of play action behind one of the best offensive lines in football. Both Hurts and Sanders rank in the top 6 in the NFL in yards per push at 5.6 and 5.5, respectively, and both players have over 740 yards rushing on the season.
The Eagles’ ability to run the ball allows them to dominate time of possession in many games. Over the last three weeks, only the Colts and Titans have a higher average time of possession than the Eagles who possess the ball for 33 minutes and 20 seconds a game. The Eagles rush for 9.7 first downs and 1.5 touchdowns a game — both of which are league leading numbers.
On defense, the Eagles have one of the strongest pass rushing units in the NFL behind Javon Hargrave, Josh Sweat, and Fletcher Cox. According to next gen stats, they rank 4th in the NFL in average time to throw on defense at 2.68 seconds. They are the ninth best rushing defense on the season, giving up 104.6 yards a game, and the second best rushing defense over their last three games.

Washington Football Team Analysis
Coming off their worst loss of the season against the Cowboys, the Washington Football Team has lost any playoff momentum they established during their four game win streak from Nov 14 to Dec 5. This team was ravaged by COVID before their game against the Eagles two weeks ago and hasn’t looked the same since. Taylor Heinicke looked like a shell of himself, and they had to go to the practice squad to find healthy running backs.
With Kyle Allen getting some snaps in last week’s game, the QB situation on Sunday remains uncertain and this will likely have a pretty sizable impact on betting markets. The Washington passing offense currently registers as the 20th best in the NFL, averaging 208.3 yards a game. The Football Team has dealt with injury problems at the running back position with Antonio Gibson and JD McKissic both on the IR. Over the season, they have the 14th ranked rushing offense in the NFL, averaging 116.7 yards a game, though over the last 3 weeks they rank third to last in the NFL at just over 82 yards a game.
The Washington Football Team defense continues to be led by their run defense which also ranks 14th in the NFL in YPG. Their passing defense continues to struggle, ranking 30th in the NFL and giving up 269.2 yards a game. They rank 25th in yards per point at 13.8 and 17th in red zone defense, allowing touchdowns on 53 percent of opponent red zone drives.

Philadelphia Eagles vs Washington Football Team Daily Fantasy Pick
While this Philadelphia team has become defined by their ability to run the ball, they’re going to have to throw it a little bit against this banged up Washington secondary. This offers rookie WR DeVonta Smith a great opportunity for a 5+ catch game. The former Alabama receiver has been Hurts’ favorite target this year, averaging 6.2 targets a game. Washington is the worst passing defense the Eagles have faced all year, and without William Jackson at CB for Washington, Smith is going to have a mismatch. The WR is currently listed at $6,300 on DraftKings and $6,100 on FanDuel.
