San Francisco 49ers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars Matchup Preview (11/21/21)

The 49ers beat down the Rams on Monday night with a final score of 31-10 as they dominated their divisional rival. Meanwhile, the Jaguars lost to their divisional rival in the Colts, although the final score could have been worse than it was ultimately. Trevor Lawrence has had some nice moments as a rookie. Still, his inconsistency has not helped elevate a mediocre Jacksonville roster, and the 49ers will likely take advantage in this game.

San Francisco 49ers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars Betting Odds

The Trends

  • 49ers are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games as a road favorite
  • Jaguars are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games as a home underdog
  • 49ers are 4-0 ATS in these teams’ last 4 meetings
  • Over is 6-0 in the 49ers’ last 6 games after an ATS win
  • Under is 4-0 in the Jaguars’ last 4 games overall

The Pick

The Niners are getting healthier on offense, and that makes them very dangerous. Deebo Samuel and George Kittle have been dominant this season. They should be able to run the ball in this game with Elijah Mitchell complemented by a now-healthy Jeff Wilson Jr.The Jaguars’ best defensive player, Josh Allen, will be neutralized by the dominant Trent Williams in this game. I don’t trust Jacksonville’s offensive line to keep Trevor Lawrence upright against the likes of Nick Bosa and Arik Armstead. San Francisco should be able to cover the spread here, but they have to want it, and a backdoor cover is possible if they take their foot off the gas like the Colts did last week.

My predictions: 49ers win 31-17, 49ers cover, over 46 points

San Francisco 49ers Analysis

I’ve never been the biggest fan of Jimmy Garoppolo, but a full-strength 49ers’ offense allows him to limit the chances he takes and simply get the ball to the team’s excellent playmakers. Garoppolo completed 78.9% of his passes against the Rams last week and now gets to face a much worse Jacksonville defense. Deebo Samuel has been one of the best all-around weapons in football this year, and he finished with 133 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns last week. Elijah Mitchell is the clear-cut workhorse back for this team – he got 27 carries in their blowout win last week – and he should be efficient, albeit in a surprisingly tricky matchup as the Jaguars allow the fifth-fewest yards per carry this season. George Kittle should also excel in this game now that he’s fully healthy.

I expected the 49ers’ secondary to struggle to defend against Matthew Stafford last week as they are missing a handful of key players, but that wasn’t the case. Nick Bosa is the big name, but Arik Armstead is arguably even more important with his ability to generate an inside pass-rush. Jimmie Ward came up huge with two interceptions, including a pick-six on Monday, and his presence is even more critical with Jason Verrett and Jaquiski Tartt on Injured Reserve. San Francisco’s run defense has been dominant this season. They rank fifth in run defense DVOA. Even if James Robinson and Carlos Hyde can play through their respective injuries, I have concerns about Jacksonville’s ability to move the ball on the ground. This will be a challenging game for Trevor Lawrence to handle.

Jacksonville Jaguars Analysis

It’s not ideal that the most positive takeaway from Trevor Lawrence’s rookie season is “well, Peyton Manning had a bad rookie year too.” By all means, Lawrence has flashed the talent that made him the consensus #1 overall pick. However, he has completed just 58% of his passes and has a passer rating of just 72.1, higher than only Sam Darnold and Justin Fields among players who have started nine or more games. Marvin Jones Jr. and Laviska Shenault are a talented wide receiver tandem, but Lawrence hasn’t been able to get the ball to them consistently. Some of that falls on the poor play-calling coming from Urban Meyer, as well. Jacksonville’s offensive line had a solid start to the year, but injuries to Brandon Linder and A.J. Cann have changed that lately. James Robinson has been very efficient, however, with 5.4 YPC.

Jacksonville has shown some defensive improvement in some areas this season, and it’s a better defense than it was last year. However, the potential absence of Myles Jack, the team’s best linebacker, would hold back what should be an excellent run defense. The Jaguars rank seventh in run defense DVOA on Football Outsiders. However, they rank just 31st in pass defense DVOA as they have just 16 sacks, the fifth-fewest in the NFL, and have allowed 260.4 passing yards per game, the eighth-most. Shaquill Griffin was a worthwhile free-agent pickup, but Tyson Campbell has struggled as a rookie, and the Jaguars have had an especially tough time covering tight ends. It’s hard to imagine how this defense offers much resistance against a Niners offense with tons of momentum on its side.

San Francisco 49ers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars Daily Fantasy Picks

The DFS pricing has still not adjusted on Elijah Mitchell, and it’s crazy to me, but it certainly provides excellent value. Don’t be spooked by the favorable metrics suggesting the Jaguars have a strong run defense – Mitchell could see 25+ carries again this week, given the expected positive game script. Jeff Wilson Jr. is expected to be more of the third-down back, but he saw ten carries last week and could be a decent flier with that type of workload in a similar game script again this week. Deebo Samuel and George Kittle are worth spending up for, but I wouldn’t be playing Brandon Aiyuk, given the 49ers likely having low passing volume. James Robinson is a decent enough play, but Mitchell is cheaper and has a higher upside. Jamal Agnew and Dan Arnold continue to produce as low-cost options for Jacksonville. Other than those guys, there’s nobody else on the Jaguars I’d play in DFS.
