Washington Football Team vs. Carolina Panthers Matchup Preview (11/21/21)
Washington and Carolina earned huge upset wins in Week 10 over teams favored by more than a touchdown. The Football Team knocked off the Buccaneers as both teams came off their respective bye weeks while the Panthers bludgeoned a Cardinals team missing its top quarterback, running back, and wide receiver. These teams will believe they have a solid shot to make the playoffs with a wide-open NFC Wild Card field. This game is integral to their playoff chances, and both teams will be fired up to win.

The Pick
I was prepared to discuss the mismatch between the Washington defensive line and the Carolina offensive line, but Montez Sweat was already on the IR, and Chase Young joined him with a torn ACL. Cam Newton gives this offense a different dynamic element, and Christian McCaffrey looked fully healthy last week. The more efficient Carolina offense helps the defense play up to its full potential, especially with Stephon Gilmore ramped up and ready to go. Washington’s offense is still dealing with nagging injuries, and they don’t get the job done two weeks in a row against another stout defense.
My predictions: Panthers win 23-17, Panthers cover, under 43.5 points

Washington Football Team Analysis
Taylor Heinecke was exceptional last week against the Buccaneers as he completed 81.3% of his passes and finished with a stellar passer rating of 110.4. It’s all the more impressive that Heinecke was that successful when you consider that he was sacked five times behind an injured offensive line. He spread the ball around as eight different players had two or more catches, including Terry McLaurin, who finished with six catches for 59 yards and the crucial third-down reception that sealed the win for Washington. Antonio Gibson wasn’t efficient against a top run defense in Tampa, but he scored two touchdowns, and it was good to see him get 26 touches as he is healthier coming off the bye week. Washington continues to be without Curtis Samuel and Logan Thomas, leaving their offense more predictable and easier to stop.
Washington was expected to have one of the best defenses in the league this season, but after ranking third in defensive DVOA last year, the Football Team has fallen to 27th in that category. However, last week, the defense showed significant improvement in holding Tom Brady and the Buccaneers to just 19 points, as Tampa had as many turnovers as it did touchdowns (2). However, Washington lost Chase Young to a season-ending ACL tear in that game, and with Montez Sweat already on Injured Reserve, the pass-rush will have a hard time making an impact against Carolina. Jon Bostic’s absence has also rendered the run defense less successful, which is a problem against Christian McCaffrey.

Carolina Panthers Analysis
Cam Newton is reportedly preparing to be the Panthers’ starting quarterback this week after playing in a limited capacity last week following signing with the team. Newton was mostly involved in the red zone where he ran for one touchdown and threw for another to Robby Anderson for his first touchdown reception in almost a month. It was also great to see Christian McCaffrey back in top form as he finished with 161 yards from scrimmage on 23 touches. Of course, D.J. Moore is still an incredibly talent at wide receive despite his minimal production as of late. The Panthers’ offense is fundamentally different than it was even a couple of weeks ago. The lack of film on Cam Newton with this current group makes the jobs of the Washington defensive coaches tough this week.
As the offense increased its efficiency, the Carolina defense stepped up massively against Colt McCoy’s Cardinals. The lack of a strong opponent means we have to take it with a grain of salt, but the Panthers have a talented defense that must be taken seriously moving forward. Haason Reddick was dominant with three QB hits and 1.5 sacks, while the team finished with four sacks. Reddick and Burns can overwhelm a banged-up offensive line that struggled last week. The introduction of Stephon Gilmore across from Donte Jackson gives the Panthers a dominant cornerback tandem. They will also have the upper hand against Washington, who doesn’t have many consistent pass-catchers outside of Terry McLaurin.

Washington Football Team vs. Carolina Panthers Daily Fantasy Picks
I’m projecting this to be a lower-scoring game, but that doesn’t mean we can’t find fantasy value on both sides. All it means is this is not the game to target for stacks. Cam Newton is an epic value at the moment, however, as I have him ranked as a top-12 fantasy QB this week. You don’t have to stack him, given his rushing upside, but I don’t have a problem pairing him with D.J. Moore or Robby Anderson against Washington, who allows the most fantasy points to wide receivers. Christian McCaffrey is worth spending up on moving forward as this offense can now allow him to succeed at his highest level. I’m not chasing the touchdowns with Antonio Gibson against a stout run defense, and it’s hard to recommend Terry McLaurin given the tough matchup, but he’s worth a flier in a GPP lineup with his immense talent. Other than those two, I’m not recommending anyone in Washington for DFS.
