Washington Football Team vs. Green Bay Packers Matchup Preview (10/24/21)
A few weeks ago, the Football Team looked far superior to the Packers. However, we’re nearing the halfway point of the NFL season, and both these teams have begun to regress to the mean.
The Packers have won and covered in five straight games. It hasn’t been convincing at times (see: Week 5 vs. Cincinnati), but Green Bay has been effective. Aaron Rodgers is back to his old ways, and the Packers are hunting for the NFC’s No. 1 seed.
Meanwhile, Taylor Heinicke is on a cold streak, and Washington fans are lining up to donate Ryan Fitzpatrick a spare hip. However, the problem with the 2-4 Football Team isn’t so much their quarterback, but their underwhelming defense.
The Packers currently sit as 9.5-point favorites, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see that number move past 10 as the week progresses. However, does that mean Green Bay is an auto-bet? Or, does Washington provide value as heavy home underdogs?
Washington Football Team vs. Green Bay Packers Betting Odds
I simply don’t believe in the Washington defense.
This secondary is awful. One of the worst in the NFL by most metrics. I faded the Football Team against Patrick Mahomes last week, and that worked well, as Mahomes tossed for 400 yards and two touchdowns while completing 68% of his passes.
Plus, the Football Team forced three turnovers, and still lost by three scores.
Rodgers has thrown just one interception since the Week 1 loss to the Saints, and he’ll tear apart this overrated defense just like Mahomes did last week.
While I believe the Packers win by double-digits, I feel more comfortable playing their over 30.5 point team total. Washington has allowed 30+ points in each of their last five games, and the Football Team will again facing one of the league’s best quarterbacks.

Washington Football Team Analysis
As mentioned, the Football Team’s defense is fraudulent.
Specifically in the passing game, where the secondary ranks 30th in passing EPA per play allowed and 31st in PFF’s coverage grades. Through six games, Washington has allowed the most passing yards in the NFL (1857) with a 16:4 touchdown-to-interception ratio.

While Tayor Heinicke had his moments early in the season, he’s taken a turn for the worse in recent weeks:
- Week 4 vs. NO: 20-for-41 (48%), 248 yards (6.0 YPA), 0 TD, 2 INT, 2 Big Time Throws, 4 Turnover Worthy Plays, 45.0 PFF passing grade
- Week 5 vs. KC: 24-for-39 (61%), 182 yards (4.7 YPA), 1 TD, 1 INT, 0 Big Time Throws, 1 Turnover Worthy Play, 66.5 PFF passing grade
How you throw for only 182 yards and score 13 points against Kansas City’s trash defense is beyond me.
Add in an average offensive line and an underwhelming rush game, and this is where the Football Team ranks across the league in efficiency:

Green Bay Packers Analysis
After a wild offseason and a pathetic Week 1, the Packers are officially back.
Following five straight wins and five straight against the spread wins, Green Bay has already built a two-game lead in the NFC North. The offense leads the way, ranking among the top-10 NFL teams in the following advanced statistics:
- EPA per play
- Passing EPA per play
- Passing Success Rate
- Rush EPA per play
- Rush Success Rate
- PFF’s receiving grades
- PFF’s rush grades
Rodgers has been excellent, of course, but Davante Adams has been the team’s best player so far. Through six weeks, Adams leads the NFL in yards (668), receptions (46), and PFF’s receiving grades. He’s doing it at a highly efficient rate, recording 14.5 yards per reception, and he can do it anywhere on the field.

Washington Football Team vs. Green Bay Packers Daily Fantasy Picks
Therefore, my favorite DFS play for this matchup is Adams.
Adams is a mis-match for anyone on the field, but Washington’s cornerbacks are particularly awful. Adams will most likely be matched up on William Jackson III or Kendall Fuller, but both will be bad for Football Team fans. Fuller has allowed a 66.7% completion percentage and 9.7 yards per reception when targeted, while Jackson has allowed a 51.4% completion percentage and 14.3 yards per reception.
I’m expecting the Packers pass attack to fill up the box score on Sunday, and everything starts with Adams, who paces the team in Target Marketshare at 38%.
