The Celtics had to go through the proverbial trenches to get to the Finals, with Brooklyn, Milwaukee, and Miami standing in their way. A shift in culture and focus catapulted Boston to the second seed in the East and made it one of the most feared teams when April came around. Now, Boston returns every key player on its roster and even added star guard Malcolm Brogdon and microwave scoring forward Danilo Gallinari to its lineup. Boston enters the 2022-23 NBA season as the favorite to win the Finals on most sportsbooks. It is still feasible to think that the Celtics have not hit their ceiling yet, as Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown still have room for improvement, and Boston had no Finals experience before last season. As a matter of fact, besides Al Horford, the C’s are actually relatively young. Only two players on their roster are over 30 years old as of July 2022: Al Horford and newly acquired Danilo Gallinari. After several impressive playoff outings, it’s clear that Horford still has plenty of gas in the tank. Gallinari also posted a double-digit scoring average for the 13th straight season; he will still be a threat off the bench for Boston. The Celtics addressed all concerns regarding their roster this off-season, and it would be short-sighted not to include them in championship conversations in 2023.

Reasons Why Boston Celtics Can & Can’t Win NBA 2022-23 Championship

Strengths

  • Defense: From late January through the end of the season, Boston ranked first with a 107.3 defensive rating, over three points lower (better) than the next closest team. It’s hard to qualitatively express the impressiveness of this feat. Naturally, the C’s finished first in defensive efficiency, opponent points per game, opponent eFG% (effective field goal percentage), and opponent 3P% (three-point percentage.) In short, they are far and away the best defensive team in the NBA. The addition of Malcolm Brogdon, a talented on-ball defender, further pushes Boston ahead of the next closest team on that end of the floor. Under different leadership and culture, Brogdon should be an even better defender than he was in Indiana.
  • Depth: The additions of Malcolm Brogdon and Danilo Gallinari give Boston one of the deepest teams in the NBA. As a matter of fact, Boston’s bench could probably beat some NBA teams’ starters. It will be a real challenge for the C’s to figure out which lineup it should deploy on a nightly basis; however, that is not necessarily a bad problem. If Malcolm Brogdon comes off the bench for the Celtics, it will be borderline criminal what that second unit will do to opponents.

    Weaknesses

    • Offensive Consistency: This was the primary reason Boston came up just short of an NBA Championship last season. Boston had dry streaks offensively throughout the postseason, but it became more apparent against the Golden State Warriors, who can quickly go on runs. The C’s offense would become stagnant with the ball stopping in Jaylen Brown or Jayson Tatum’s hands; this was primarily because their offensive sets were not very effective. This can be partially attributed to not having a playmaking point guard. Let’s face it: Marcus Smart is an excellent defender but will not be a top-tier creator and playmaker for others. The addition of Malcolm Brogdon should help this issue immensely.
