Cleveland Browns vs. Los Angeles Chargers Matchup Preview (10/10/21)
The Cleveland Browns are flying to Inglewood, CA this Sunday to play the new and improved Los Angeles Chargers team. The Browns are coming off a 14-7 win against the Minnesota Vikings while the Chargers are coming off an exciting 28-14 Monday Night Football win against the Las Vegas Raiders. Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield played really poorly against the Vikings completing less than half of his passes and not throwing a single touchdown. Mayfield was lucky because his running backs, Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt, bailed him out with strong play. On the other side, Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert had a great game throwing for 222 yards and three touchdowns.
Cleveland Browns vs. Los Angeles Chargers Betting Odds
These are the two most evenly matched teams you will see play this Sunday. They both have strong and consistent defenses, a great wide receiver duo, and typically good quarterbacks. The Chargers come in as two-point favorites. Everyone will be watching to see if Browns QB Baker Mayfield can turn the corner while simultaneously looking to see if Chargers QB Justin Herbert can continue living up to the hype. The Browns defense did a miraculous job of holding the Vikings to only seven points last week. As good as they are, they will have a much harder matchup in the Chargers. This game will be close, but I expect the Chargers to barely edge out the Browns.
My Predictions: Chargers 24, Browns 23, Chargers do not cover, over 46.5 points

Cleveland Browns Analysis
The Cleveland Browns have had a really strong start to the season. They are currently in a three-way tie for first place in the AFC North. Oddly enough, the Browns winning ways are in spite of QB Baker Mayfield’s poor play. Mayfield still has time to turn it around, but he has not looked good so far. He has 935 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, one rushing touchdown, and two interceptions. Mayfield has shown that he can excel in this league. He threw for 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 2020. He will need to turn that corner this week and take some responsibility off the shoulders of his running backs and defense if he wants to win.
The Browns wide receivers have done nothing but underperform this season. You cannot solely blame them; Their quarterback has also been underperforming. I am about to tell you a statistic I had to double-check: Browns wide receivers have not caught a single touchdown pass this season. Tight End Austin Hooper has caught a touchdown pass, but Odell Beckham Jr, Jarvis Landry, Donovan Peoples-Jones, Rashard Higgins, and Ryan Switzer have not caught one. If they want to win against the Chargers, they need to change that and catch a few touchdowns.
Unlike the Browns wide receiver core, the Browns running back duo of Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt have been the offense’s x-factor this season. Nick Chubb has 362 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns while Kareem Hunt has 234 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. They are both averaging over five yards per carry. They just need to keep on performing the way that they are and hope that QB Baker Mayfield steps up.
The Browns have a scary good defense this year. They have held opposing defenses to 16.8 points per game. This defense does not create many turnovers, but they hold opposing offenses to very few yards. They will be facing a Chargers offense with two strong receivers and a running back that can rush and catch the ball. They need to keep on pressuring the quarterback and start creating turnovers.

Los Angeles Chargers Analysis
Like the Cleveland Browns, the Los Angeles Chargers have also had a very impressive start to the season. They are also currently in a three-way tie for first place in their division. The difference is that the Chargers winning ways are in large part due to the play of QB Justin Herbert. Herbert has 1,178 passing yards, nine touchdowns, and three interceptions. He will face his toughest opponent yet this week in the Cleveland Browns defense. If he can handle the pressure from the defensive line and scramble when he needs to, the Chargers should win the game.
The Chargers have one of the best wide receiver cores of Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, and Jalen Guyton in the NFL. Guyton has had a quiet season, but Williams and Allen have been nightmares for opposing defenses. Allen has 294 receiving yards and one touchdown while Williams has 306 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Williams struggled to get open against the Raiders in Week 4, but if he can change that, the Charge should be able to score a couple of touchdowns.
Chargers running back Austin Ekeler has been a monster this season. He has 424 yards from scrimmage and four touchdowns. Two of those touchdowns came against the Raiders last week. He has an opportunity to prove why he is a top running back when he faces the Browns menacing defensive line this week. If he does, the Chargers should be in great shape.
The Chargers defense has been much better than expected this season. After getting four sacks and one interception against the Raiders, this defense solidified themselves as top 10. Much of this has to do with the return of safety Derwin James Jr. and the emergence of rookie cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. This defense’s number one priority this week is to stop the Browns run game. If they do so, they will win.
Los Angeles Chargers
QB: Justin Herbert
RB1: Austin Ekeler
RB2: Larry Rountree III
WR1: Keenan Allen
WR2: Mike Williams
WR3: Jared Cook
TE2: Donald Parham Jr.
Cleveland Browns vs. Los Angeles Chargers Daily Fantasy Picks
Chargers tight end Jared Cook had a huge game against the Raiders last week. The first-year Charger finished with seventy yards and one touchdown. The two-time Pro Bowler is a big target at 6’5″ which gives him the edge over shorter cornerbacks and safeties. I expect him to be target a lot again this week and recommend picking him up for DFS.
