Tennessee Titans vs. New York Jets Matchup Preview (10/3/21)

The Tennessee Titans will be flying to East Rutherford, New Jersey this week to play the New York Jets. The 2-1 Titans are coming off an exciting 25-16 win against the Indianapolis Colts, and the 0-3 Jets were embarrassingly held scoreless against the Denver Broncos in a 26-0 loss. The Titans had a solid game with quarterback Ryan Tannehill throwing for three touchdowns and running back Derrick Henry running for 113 yards on 28 carries. The Titans defense also held the Colts to only 16 points. On the other side, the Jets showed that they cannot do anything right. Rookie quarterback Zach Wilson only threw for 160 yards and threw two interceptions. Typically, when a quarterback has a stat line like this, it is not all their fault. Wilson’s offensive line did not protect him well as he was sacked five times and had nine quarterback hits. I would bet that this will be a pretty one-sided game in favor of the Titans.

Tennessee Titans vs. New York Jets Betting Odds

The oddsmakers have given the Titans the edge as 7.5-point favorites this week. I am forced to agree with them. I do not think the Titans are going to struggle against the Jets. Titans QB Ryan Tannehill has proven himself to be a pretty solid leader of this team. In the last couple of seasons, he has thrown many more touchdowns than interceptions. He has had a slower start this season, but he will have a very good opportunity to amp up his performance against a weaker Jets defense. The Jets have proven themselves to be in the NFL cellar once again this season. New QB Zach Wilson could become an impactful player this year… if he gets a whole new offensive line. A bad offensive line paired with a rookie quarterback tends to result in limited offensive production and a lot of losses. I would expect another big Jets loss this week.

My predictions: Titans 27, Jets 14, Titans cover, under 46 points

Tennessee Titans Analysis

The Titans have put themselves nicely in the top half of the NFL after three weeks. This is largely because of quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Through three games this season, he has been a consistent performer. You can almost always count on him to throw more touchdowns than interceptions and to use all the weapons on his team. If he uses his star running back Derrick Henry and sprays the ball all around the field, he should have no problem lighting up this Jets defense.

Titans wide receivers A.J. Brown and Julio Jones are will not play this week. The Jets defense now has a chance of limiting the Titans scoring, however, I expect one of the Titans other receivers to play well a not-so-great Jets secondary. Look out for QB Ryan Tannehill to target his wide receivers and tight end Anthony Firsker a lot.

Running back Derrick Henry has shown once again that he can be an elite player in this NFL. He has rushed for 353 yards and three touchdowns in the first three games of the season. QB Ryan Tannehill depends on him a lot to push the ball down the field and help his team get into a good position to score. He also has 105 receiving yards this year. Expect him to have another great game against a weak Jets defense and probably score a couple of touchdowns. Henry is a very valuable piece of this Titans offense and will need to have a big season if the Titans plan on winning the AFC Championship.

The Titans defense is much weaker than their offense. They lost defensive end Jadaveon Clowney in free agency but added Denico Autry. Even with all the new offseason additions, they still rank as a bottom-half defense. With all that being said, they have a good opportunity this week to step up against an even weaker Jets offense (and offensive line). Expect the defensive line to get a handful of sacks and pressure Jets QB Zach Wilson a lot.

New York Jets Analysis

Unsurprisingly, the New York Jets have had another poor start to their season. They are currently one of the few winless teams left in the NFL and are looking for that first win against the Titans this Sunday. Rookie QB Zach Wilson has not shown a lot of promise so far, however, he has also not had a lot of help from his offensive line. If he wants to have any chance of putting up a fight against this tough Titans team, he will need to use all the weapons he has. He will need to throw the ball to all his receivers, tight ends, and running backs and will need to trust his running backs to be able to push the ball down the field. The Jets were shut out last week against the Denver Broncos and now have literally nowhere to go but up. Maybe, that will give them the motivation to play well against a very good Titans team.

The Jets have a dicey wide receiver situation this week. Wide receivers Jamison Crowder and Elijah Moore are currently listed as questionable for Sunday’s game. If they do end up playing, that would be a big help for the Jets. However, they are going to need their quarterback to step up and handle the pressure if they want to be impactful.

The Jets running back duo of Ty Johnson and Michael Carter has proven to be pretty ineffective so far. They both have not rushed for a single touchdown and are yet to reach 100 rushing yards. To put that into perspective, Titans RB Derrick Henry has averaged over 100 rushing yards per game this season. It would be unfair of me to put their poor performances solely on them; They, like their quarterback, have not received good blocking and protection. Ty Johnson and Michael Carter will need to overcome their offensive line and show why they belong in the NFL this week.

The Jets defense has been put in a tough spot this season. They have been forced to play a lot because of how little their offense is on the field. That makes them more susceptible to getting tired and making mistakes. If the offense can miraculously push the ball down the field and eat time off the clock, the defense might have a chance to limit the Titans scoring. Watch out for linebacker C.J. Mosley to make a big impact.

Tennessee Titans vs. New York Jets Daily Fantasy Picks

Titans QB Ryan Tannehill has a really good chance to dominate the Jets defense this week. Even without wide receivers Julio Jones and AJ Brown, Tannehill should be on the field a lot and have many passing opportunities. I would also recommend picking up RB Derrick Henry. He picks up big yard and knows how to put the ball in the end zone. Together, they will probably both have big games against this consistently weak New York Jets team.
