Top Pitchers
Jacob deGrom ($12,000) vs Cubs– To no one’s surprise, deGrom has been excellent for the Mets striking out tons of batters and not allowing much of anything. He is coming off a 1 ER 13 K performance vs the Braves and in his last 9 starts he has yet to allow more than 2 ERs. Tonight he will be up against the Cubs, where in his last appearance he racked up 9 Ks across 6 innings and allowed 2 ERs. The pitching is really sparse in this evening slate so I think when someone of deGrom’s talent is available you have to pay the price.
Dereck Rodriguez ($4,600) vs Padres– Whenever I’m looking for a low cost pitcher, anybody vs the Padres always catches my eyes. With Machado struggling and Fernando Tatis on the IL they don’t have much star power in the lineup and thus have been struggling on the offensive end. Rodriguez hasn’t gone deep into games but at this price we don’t need all of that. The Padres strikeout at one of the highest rates in the majors and along with their sputtering offense I think that makes Rodriguez a play tonight at home.
Top Hitters
Eduardo Escobar ($4,400) vs Dodgers– Eduardo hasn’t been playing the best baseball but he still has 29 HRs and 103 RBIs on the season and will be going up against a familiar pitcher tonight Hyun-Jin Ryu. In 14 career PAs vs the Dodgers lefty Escobar is hitting .308 with a double and a walk. Ryu has also been struggling himself with 11 ER and 15 hits allowed in his last 10 innings pitched. I like Escobar at this price tonight.
Elvis Andrus ($4,400) vs Mariners– Elvis hasn’t come through for us in past games we have put him on my roster but I think that changes tonight vs veteran right hander Felix Hernandez. These two have a long history with Elvis hitting .283 vs the Mariners starter across 120 career PAs. However, we know Felix has been on the downhill the past couple of years and I think we will see Andrus take advantage of that tonight in hitter friendly Texas.
Omar Narvaez ($4,000) vs Rangers– Narvaez has been one of the better hitting catchers in baseball this season but with the Mariners struggling not many people have heard of him. He is hitting .283 on the season and has been pretty productive with 19 HRs and 48 RBIs in 364 ABs. He gets on base exceptionally well and with the lack of catching talent paying $4,000 for Narvaez tonight seems like one of the better options.
Starlin Castro ($3,600) vs Reds– I’m not sure why but somehow Starlin Castro keeps finding his way into my lineup. I like his matchup vs struggling Reds SP Alex Wood who has allowed 24 hits and 16 ERs in his last 4 starts combined. Against Wood in his career Castro is hitting .500 with a double in 10 ABs. The price is nothing to worry about and in these smaller slates I think it is important to take some guys who may be under the radar and I believe he is one of them.
